Handmade Gemstone Jewelry - "Grand Canyon" necklace
This beautiful planet is full of great wonders, and the Grand Canyon is one of them. It's so vast that it's just about incomprehensible. It's like trying to wrap your mind around infinity because it seems timeless and endless.
When I started to make this pink opal opalite and jasper necklace I was struck by the changing colors of the opalite. As an opal, it plays with the light. Not in the flashy way we think of opals, but in a much more subtle way. It reminds me of the way the colors change in the Grand Canyon. Every time you look at it, it looks different as the light changes. The subtle colors of gray, rust, yellow get darker and lighter. The sun shines here, a shadow there, the color changes again and again.
Taking pictures of this necklace was a little bit like taking pictures of the Grand Canyon. It was difficult to capture the nature of the stones because they were so changeable. I took pictures of it against various backgrounds. Against white or light brown it looked light, senna really brought out the pink tones, etc. Finally I tried blue, and that seemed to best portray the basic essence of the stones.
Because of the fascinating color play this necklace will go with just about anything. It's an adventure. It may not be the real Grand Canyon, but just let your mind soar a bit......

A short trip to Sonoma Plaza
Rob and I and Goopi, our dog, took a short trip to Sonoma Plaza this afternoon for a little walk and window shopping. The clydesdales were in their pasture eating hay. They were way in the back, so it was hard to get their picture. I don't know what we got - I don't know if the camera wasn't set correctly or if they were so far away our camera couldn't get a clear picture. What we wound up with is something that reminds me of an impressionist painting. I kind of like it!
Then in front of the old Sonoma Mission is a huge cactus plant that is beginning to bloom. I've been told that the cactus fruit makes good jam. Once I got a little too close to this plant and wished I hadn't. I was very far away from any visible needles, but there have to be invisible ones! This is probably the largest cactus plant I've seen in Northern California.

Handmade Gemstone Jewelry - the healing power of gemstones
Handmade Flame Jasper and Coral BraceletClick here for more information
I'm often asked to recommend gemstones or to make gemstone jewelry to help a person who is in a particular situation, or who has a particular health problem.
I do believe in the healing power of gemstones. I have felt the effects of gemstones myself on my own state of being. One time I went through about 10 days of feeling agitated. During that time I picked up some flame jasper beads and held them in my hands and absent mindedly played with them. After about 5 minutes I felt much calmer than I had in days. It was really cool! A few days later I learned that I was taking too much thyroid medication, lowered my dose, and I no longer felt agitated. Feelings of agitation are one of the many symptoms caused by too much thyroid. Placebo effect? I think not. I was not expecting to feel different in any way by playing with some beads. Besides, I think the placebo effect is grossly overrated. Just my opinion.
Throughout history gems have been used for their healing powers, among other uses. Just like medicinal herbs, which were used and were very effective, gemstones were used also, although I suspect that some uses were based on superstition. I really doubt that aquamarine has the power to save a sailor in a typhoon, for example. But maybe it does in some way, who am I to say? I do believe that everything, everyone has a vibration, even if it's very subtle. Ever notice that by being with a hyperactive person, we feel more hyperactive? Or by being with a person who is very laid back we feel the same way? I think gems have vibrations too, and I believe that by being in contact with them we can change our own vibration.
I don't make jewelry purely for healing purposes. There are several people on line who do. I really like gemstones for several reasons. I like rocks that look like rocks - really - jewelry that looks like it was made from a rock from the back yard. And I like rocks that are rare and incredibly beautiful. They're all a part of nature, like the woods and open fields near where I live, like the hawk circling in the sky looking for lunch, like you and me. I like gemstones because they feel good and are natural art.
I guess we all love this planet we live on, this Earth, and feel a strong connection to it. Gemstones are just a beautiful form given to us by this Earth.

Handmade gemstone jewelry - more new items added
We've added more bracelets and several necklaces to the web site, including this wonderful African green opal and rhyolite necklace. The green African opal is a true opal, and is found in a province in South Africa. To date it is found no where else. Rhyolite is a fine grained volcanic rock similar to granite in composition. It is found largely in the USA.

Handmade Gemstone Jewelry - Many new things coming soon
The jewelry elves have been very busy making lots of new things. I'm in the process of taking pictures and getting the pages ready to be loaded on the web site - so stay tuned. I'm hoping that when the World Series is over my husband will give me a hand. (He's a baseball nut!) In the meantime here's a sample of what's to come.
